Overview: what this utility is for
VMware Install Cleaner is a free, third-party utility that can help tidy up, defragment, and compact VMware Fusion virtual disks. It is not an official VMware product, but many users find it useful as a follow-up after running Fusion’s own disk shrinking and defragmenting tools.
Key limitations and realistic expectations
- It cannot shrink a preallocated virtual disk below the space reserved in the VMDK; reducing an already preallocated disk size is not supported.
- If the virtual disk file on the host is larger than the free space reported inside the guest OS, this cleaner can help reclaim that difference after you’ve already defragmented and shrunk the filesystem.
- It’s intended to assist when Fusion’s automated cleanup misses large, stubborn files; small files are usually handled automatically by Fusion.
- Some users also employ it to remove leftover registry entries or other remnants that can interfere with installing new VM software.
Safe procedure to run the cleaner
- Make a full backup or snapshot of the VM before making changes.
- Power off the virtual machine completely (do not leave it suspended).
- Run the cleaner tool on the host to perform the cleanup operations.
- Restart the virtual machine and verify disk size and system integrity.
- If you encounter problems, restore from the backup or snapshot.
Use Fusion’s built-in cleanup first
- Open Fusion, select the virtual machine, go to Virtual Machine → Settings → General, and choose the cleanup/cleanup virtual machine options.
- Rely on Fusion’s built-in utilities as the first step; they handle most routine optimizations and are officially supported.
- Resort to third-party tools only when Fusion’s cleanup does not resolve issues with large leftover files or when extra manual intervention is required.
When it’s worth using VMware Install Cleaner
If Fusion’s cleanup tools fail to remove large, stubborn files or if the host-side VMDK size remains much larger than the guest-OS-reported usage even after shrinking and defragmenting, this tool can be a useful secondary option. It’s also sometimes helpful when repeated installs fail because of residual files or registry entries that need manual removal.
Alternative to consider
If you prefer trying another product, consider VMware Server (trial) as an alternative solution to test different management and cleanup approaches.
