What this tool does
IP Messenger is a free, pop-up style instant messaging app designed for communication inside a local area network. Built on TCP/IP (UDP), it runs without a server and discovers other users on the same LAN automatically. The program focuses on fast, lightweight messaging and includes additional capabilities such as file exchange and remote desktop capture.
Main capabilities
- Remote desktop capture and screen grabs for sharing what’s on a colleague’s screen
- Sending messages that include embedded images for richer conversations
- Exchanging files and folders directly across the network without a central server
Getting started quickly
The application is straightforward to install and requires no special infrastructure. After installing it on each PC in the office, it will locate other instances on the network and populate your contact list automatically. The interface is deliberately simple: select a contact in the upper pane and type your message in the larger area below. The program runs in the background and sits in the system tray; the tray icon flashes when a new message arrives.
If you receive a message while the main window is closed, click the tray icon to open it. Messages sent with the “Seal” option require pressing the Open button to reveal their contents. Conversation replies can be forwarded or dismissed, and threading is not used — chat records open in a separate window.
Keeping a chat history
Recording chats can be essential for work — to retrieve shared files or recover past conversations. To enable logging:
- Open the program’s Settings and choose Details/Log Settings.
- Enable the logging option and pick a folder where the log should be stored.
- Click Apply, then OK to save the configuration.
- In the chosen folder create a text file named ipmsg (this will store the logs).
- To inspect saved logs later, return to Settings and choose View Log.
Why use it for internal teams
For teams on the same local network who need rapid, unobtrusive messaging and file sharing, IP Messenger is a practical choice. Because it is serverless, it has a small footprint and mostly remains in the background. While its visual design could benefit from modernization, its core functionality — quick delivery of messages and direct file transfers — remains reliable and efficient compared with heavier cloud-based tools.
