What the app is now
Google Wallet (the successor to Google Pay) is a free mobile app from Google LLC that goes beyond simple payments. While the older Google Pay centered on linking cards for quick in-store and online purchases, the revamped Wallet combines payments with everyday digital items—IDs, tickets, keys, vaccination records, and more—into a single protected place on your phone.
How it works
- Use it like you used Google Pay for contactless and online purchases wherever Google Pay is accepted.
- Present stored digital items (for example, a government ID, vaccination proof, or digital keys) directly from the app.
- Keep records of transactions and activities so you can quickly find past payments and receipts.
Note: In most countries Google Wallet replaces Google Pay. However, in the United States and Singapore both applications remain available separately; in those regions, Google Pay continues to provide peer-to-peer transfers similar to services like PayPal.
Where the rollout is happening
The updated Wallet started arriving as an update to Google Pay in many countries, including (but not limited to):
- Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom
- Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates
- Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, and Switzerland
- Kazakhstan and several other markets across Europe, Asia, and the Americas
What you can store and connect
- Payment cards, boarding passes, event tickets, and membership passes in one secured app.
- Official documents and digital IDs where supported (U.S. residents can, in some cases, add driver’s licenses) and even virtual car keys on compatible vehicles.
- Integration with other Google services (Calendar, Assistant) to surface timely alerts such as flight status and reminders.
Design and usability observations
The expanded functionality makes Wallet a very convenient central hub, but the interface still needs refinement. Many core features are currently buried several screens deep, so a layout refresh and improved discoverability would help make the app easier to use for a broader audience.
