Mobile spreadsheet creation and editing
Google Sheets provides a fast, straightforward way to build and modify spreadsheets from a phone or tablet. The app is separate from Google Drive but remains tightly connected to Google's cloud storage, so files stored online are easy to reach from your device.
Main capabilities
- Work together with others in real time, so multiple people can update the same spreadsheet simultaneously.
- Access and edit files without an internet connection thanks to offline mode.
- Keep everything in sync with Google Drive so you can open documents you started elsewhere.
- Rely on automatic saving so you do not need to remember a manual Save step.
- Create new spreadsheets and edit existing ones directly on your mobile device.
Core spreadsheet tools
- Combine cells and control how content spans an area of the sheet.
- Lock rows or columns in place so headers or key fields remain visible while you scroll.
- Rearrange and organize rows or columns by sorting data.
- Enter and use formulas and basic operations to compute results.
- Edit cell contents and apply formatting (font, color, alignment, etc.).
Known shortcomings
Although the app covers many standard tasks, it does not include every desktop capability. Examples of limitations mentioned include incomplete support for the full set of Sheets functions and for pivot-table features, no in-sheet search functionality, and an inability to add notes or comments in some versions. The app is also said to lack direct support for Excel’s XLS format, which can be a problem for users who rely heavily on Microsoft Office files. If you need robust XLS editing on mobile, consider alternatives such as QuickOffice, KingSoft Office, or Microsoft Office Mobile.
User interface and experience
The interface is clean and practical. A sidebar menu offers quick access to spreadsheets in Drive, starred items, and files saved locally, and you can switch between list and grid views with thumbnail previews. When you open or create a sheet, editing controls appear in a toolbar above the sheet area; on smaller screens (for example, iPhones) you may need to slide the toolbar to reveal all options, while tablets (like iPads) provide a more spacious and comfortable editing surface.
When it’s the right choice
For viewing sheets and performing basic calculations or light data work, the app is convenient and effective. If your work frequently requires advanced functions, complex analyses, extensive Excel compatibility, or specialized features, this mobile app may not meet all those needs.
