Edit and create spreadsheets from anywhere
Google Sheets provides a fast, straightforward way to build and modify spreadsheets on your phone or tablet. Although it now exists as a standalone app separate from Google Drive, it remains tightly connected to Google’s cloud storage so you can quickly open files kept online.
Primary capabilities and collaboration
- Real-time collaboration so multiple people can edit the same sheet simultaneously.
- Offline access and editing, allowing you to work without an internet connection.
- Automatic saving to avoid manually saving changes.
- Syncing across devices and the web, so a file you start on one device is available everywhere.
- Standard spreadsheet tools: cell formatting, formulas and calculations, sorting, merging cells, and freezing rows or columns.
Shortcomings and unsupported features
- No native support for Excel (XLS) files, so heavy Microsoft Office users will need a different app.
- Lacks some advanced functions and full pivot table functionality.
- You cannot insert notes or comments within the app.
- There’s no in-sheet search capability for scanning content quickly.
If you need mobile XLS compatibility, try Microsoft Office Mobile, KingSoft Office, or QuickOffice.
Interface and user experience
The app uses a simple, functional layout that’s easy to navigate. A slide-out menu gives quick access to Drive files (including starred items) and locally stored spreadsheets. Documents can be displayed in either a list or grid view with thumbnails for identification. When you open a sheet, editing tools appear in a toolbar above the sheet area; this ribbon works well on larger screens but can feel cramped on smaller phones, where you may need to swipe to reveal all options. Tablet support (for example, on an iPad) provides a more spacious, comfortable editing environment.
Recent improvements
- Tap-to-insert cells when building formulas.
- Option to create a duplicate copy of a spreadsheet.
- A new “Incoming” view that lists spreadsheets shared with you in chronological order.
- Accessibility enhancements to improve usability for more users.
- Minor visual tweaks to the menu icon as part of Material Design refinements.
When it’s the right choice
Google Sheets is ideal if you want a lightweight, collaborative spreadsheet tool for basic to moderate tasks. It’s excellent for viewing, editing, and working together across devices, but if your workflow depends on advanced Excel features, extensive functions, or in-sheet comments, you may want to consider alternative mobile office apps.
