Quick summary
Google Chat is a free communication and productivity app from Google LLC, included in Google Workspace. It enables one-to-one and group conversations, file sharing, and video meetings, and integrates with other Workspace tools to help teams coordinate and collaborate.
Communication and collaboration tools
- Group conversations for teams and project channels
- Threaded replies so you can respond to specific messages within a discussion
- One-to-one messaging with text, emojis, and file attachments — start a chat by creating a new conversation and entering the person’s name or email
- Built-in search and filtering to locate past messages and attachments
- File sharing from Google Drive, local storage, or other cloud services
- Schedule or launch video meetings using Google Meet from a chat or via Google Calendar
- Automation through bots and app integrations to streamline routine tasks
Security and iPhone privacy
Google’s iOS client includes a number of protections intended to keep conversations private and accounts secure:
- Two-factor authentication to add an extra verification step for account access
- PIN-based locks for individual conversations to prevent unwanted access on the device
- End-to-end encryption for message content so only authorized participants can read the messages
These controls aim to secure both account authentication and conversation confidentiality on iPhones.
Interface updates and rollout timeline
Recent updates focus on faster navigation and clearer message layout:
- Mentions, Home, Direct Messages, and Spaces are accessible from a new bottom navigation bar to make switching views faster on mobile
- Incoming and outgoing messages are now shown in distinct bubbles on opposite sides of the chat window, each with a different solid-color background to help you distinguish speakers at a glance
These changes are being released gradually. The rollout started on November 29, 2023, and may take up to 15 days to appear on all devices.
Final thoughts
Google Chat combines messaging, file sharing, and Meet-based video conferencing within Google Workspace. The app’s integrations and automation can boost productivity, while its security features protect conversations on iOS. At the same time, the wide array of options and settings may feel overwhelming to some users.
