Overview: a generous anime-style RPG experience
Genshin Impact is a free-to-play action RPG created by miHoYo that invites players to roam the vibrant world of Teyvat. The game offers a large cast of playable heroes, each with distinct weapons and abilities, and encourages experimentation by letting you swap between four characters on the fly during combat or exploration.
Core gameplay and elemental interactions
Combat and puzzles in Genshin revolve around seven elemental types. These elements interact dynamically with the environment and with each other, producing layered reactions that reward strategic switching and team composition. The elemental roster includes:
- Pyro (fire)
- Geo (earth)
- Hydro (water)
- Electro (electric)
- Dendro (nature)
- Cryo (ice)
- Anemo (wind)
You can form a party of four characters whose abilities complement one another, chaining elemental effects to defeat enemies or solve area puzzles. Exploration is also a major pillar: you can climb structures, glide across valleys, open chests, and uncover hidden quests.
Inventory, crafting, and sustenance
Players can carry a very large inventory (up to 2,300 slots), collecting weapons, ingredients, tools, gadgets, and lore items. Every item includes a description, and many provide world-building details. Food crafting is useful: cooked dishes restore health, boost stats, or prevent rapid stamina loss while climbing and gliding.
Why so many players love it
Genshin Impact attracts players with its polished visuals, expansive map, and plentiful secrets. The world is densely packed with collectibles, puzzles, resource nodes, and world bosses that grant materials used to ascend characters and upgrade gear. Random events, NPC-driven mini-quests, and environmental interactions make exploration consistently rewarding.
The main objective and story setup
The central storyline begins with you and your twin sibling being separated after attempting to cross into another realm. An unknown Archon intervenes, and you wake up alone with a companion, Paimon, who becomes your guide. From there, the campaign focuses on tracking down your lost twin while assisting the inhabitants of each region—every nation in Teyvat has a unique atmosphere, culture, and questlines tied to its terrain and lore.
Multiplayer and progression limits
Although primarily designed for solo play, cooperative multiplayer unlocks at Adventure Rank 16. Up to three additional players can join a world, each free to explore independently or collaborate against bosses and elite enemies. Note that world access is gated: players can only join worlds whose World Level and Adventure Rank are at or below their own.
Monetization and fairness
Genshin uses a gacha (wish) system for acquiring many characters and some weapons. While in-app purchases can speed up access to desired heroes or items, the game does not force spending to progress—regular play, event participation, login rewards, and quests grant the game’s premium currency. Expect later content to demand more grinding or targeted pulls to obtain limited-time characters, but free players can still advance and enjoy most of the game.

Version Luna III — new content highlights
The Version Luna III update (Song of the Welkin Moon: Interlude — A Nocturne of the Far North) expands the story and introduces characters, weapons, and time-limited events:
- New characters: Durin (a Pyro attacker who shifts between two offense modes) and Jahoda (an Anemo support with healing and sustain-focused utility).
- Event-exclusive weapons: the 5-star sword Athame Artis and the 5-star bow The Daybreak Chronicles appear in event Wishes, while Rainbow Serpent’s Rain Bow is obtainable through special event activities alongside its refinement materials.
- Story continuation: Act V — A Nocturne of the Far North becomes available to players at Adventure Rank 28 after finishing Act IV, and Act VI — Melting Moonlight in the Morning Mist adds more quests and narrative beats.

Visuals, culture, and replay value
Genshin is praised for its anime-inspired art direction and diverse regional themes, which blend myth, culture, and environmental design. Quests and NPC interactions often unlock characters or inventory rewards, encouraging players to revisit areas and polish team builds as new characters and systems arrive.
