Quick overview
fseventer is a utility for monitoring disk activity that emphasizes visual presentation and a capable filtering system. It offers multiple ways to inspect file-system events and helps you focus on specific processes or paths. While most of the interface is functional and informative, one of the listed views is not actually usable.
Visual process map
Hierarchical Tree view
- Shows processes as they are spawned or changed and highlights related file paths.
- Selecting an item displays how long ago it was altered and the action that affected it.
- You can zoom the view to focus in or out and mark individual files to follow their activity.
This Tree-style display is where the built-in file inspector is most effective; the inspector provides meaningful details only when used from this hierarchical map.
Traditional activity list
Column-based overview
- A more conventional, column-oriented layout gives a concise summary of current events.
- It still offers a clear snapshot of activity for quick scanning, even if it lacks the visual depth of the Tree map.
Narrowing results with filters
Available filter options (reordered)
- Path
- Readable
- Xevents
- Fsevents
- Process
You can apply up to five filters to refine what appears in the graphical view. Adding more constraints will generally produce a more focused and accurate visualization of disk activity.
Missing and limited elements
Nonfunctional Timeline
- The interface shows a Timeline option, but it is not actually implemented and cannot be used.
Saving and cleanup
Exporting or clearing views
- When you’ve finished analyzing, you can either clear the current visualization or export it as a log file.
- Printing the representation is also supported if you need a physical copy of the captured activity.
