Project overview
BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint is a community-run effort to preserve web-based Flash games and animations that stopped working after the Adobe Flash Player was discontinued. The project packages workarounds and offline launchers so older Flash content can still be played locally, without relying on the deprecated browser plugin.
Editions and how they differ
- Flashpoint Infinity: a lightweight downloader that fetches content on demand so you don’t need terabytes of storage.
- Flashpoint Ultimate: a complete offline archive containing every saved item — ideal if you want everything available immediately without additional downloads.
If you want access to the entire collection without waiting, choose the Ultimate edition; if you prefer a minimal install that pulls files as you play, pick Infinity.
Scale, history, and status
Flashpoint began in January 2018 and is a non-commercial preservation initiative. A volunteer team of contributors assembled tools and archives to rescue web content before and after mainstream Flash support ended. The project’s catalog includes tens of thousands of titles across multiple platforms, making it one of the larger archives of legacy web games and animations.
Important practical notes
- Storage: The Ultimate package requires a very large amount of disk space once extracted; plan accordingly.
- Backups: Make copies of your data before running operations that modify the Flashpoint folder — playlists, metadata, and in-browser saves (for example from the Basilisk engine) can be lost.
- Updater tool: There’s a dedicated updater available that keeps an Ultimate installation synchronized and can replicate the archive to another directory when needed.
Why people use it
Archivists, collectors, and anyone who wants reliable offline access to Flash-era content tend to favor Flashpoint. It lets preserved games and animations continue to be experienced even though the original browser plugin is gone.
Recommendation
If you have ample storage and want offline access to the entire archive, install Flashpoint Ultimate and use the updater while maintaining backups. If you need a smaller footprint and don’t mind downloading items as you play, Flashpoint Infinity is the more space-efficient alternative.
