Overview of the tool
FileOptimizer is a free, open-source desktop utility designed to shrink and optimize many common file formats so they are easier to attach and send by email. Created by independent developer Javier Gutierrez Chamorro, the program applies a variety of recompression and cleanup techniques to reduce file size without noticeably affecting visual or functional quality. Its behavior is comparable to well-known packers and archivers such as UPX, 7-Zip, and WinRAR.
Formats it can process
- DOCX, DOCM, CHS, CHM
- BMP, XSF, FITS, and other binary or document types
- Common image, document, and web assets (icons, PDFs, HTML, etc.)
How simple it is to use
- Drag-and-drop any number of files onto the main window to queue them.
- Click the “Optimize all files” control at the top of the interface to begin recompression.
- After processing, the app presents the original and new sizes as well as the status for each item.
The interface is intentionally straightforward so that both technical users (web developers, site managers) and beginners can apply optimizations quickly. Because it removes unnecessary metadata and extraneous components, the resulting files are leaner for distribution.
What happens to originals
By default, FileOptimizer places original copies in the Recycle Bin. Note that certain stripped metadata or removed auxiliary data cannot be restored once optimization is complete, so keep backups if you need to preserve every original detail.
Customization and advanced controls
- Adjust the optimization intensity and the process priority in the Options panel.
- Choose whether to retain or copy select metadata fields and change PDF output profiles (for example, Printer or eBook targets).
These settings let you balance speed, aggressiveness, and fidelity to suit different workflows.
Sharing and workflow benefits
FileOptimizer is lightweight and fast, making it practical to reduce attachment sizes and speed up file transfers. A single click initiates the procedure, and the smaller outputs are ready to share or upload almost immediately, improving email deliverability and lowering bandwidth use.
Alternatives
If you want a different utility for secure file handling or file wiping, consider ShredIt for Windows (trial available) as an alternative tool for specific needs.
