Product snapshot

EagleFiler is a macOS utility for collecting and locating a variety of files. It captures items such as images, PDFs, word-processing documents, web pages, mail messages, and more, and provides fast retrieval tools so you can stop hunting for information.

Interface and organization

  • Three-pane layout for browsing libraries, folder-like sources, and file contents.
  • Tagging, color labels, and notes let you add searchable metadata or keep everything in one folder and rely on search.
  • Files are stored in Finder-friendly folders so Spotlight and other apps can access them directly.

What it archives

  • Images
  • PDF documents
  • Word-processing files
  • Saved web pages
  • Email messages

(These are examples — EagleFiler accepts almost any file type.)

Typical workflow

  1. Import a web page, an email, a PDF, a scanned document, or any file.
  2. Optionally encrypt the imported files and attach tags, notes, and colored labels.
  3. Use the three-pane view or the search tool to locate items instantly.

When scanning, you can set up a small helper app so the scanner sends files directly into your library and prompts you for a title and metadata during import.

Known limitations and workarounds

  • On rare occasions, Mail archives can be stored in a format that’s awkward to re-import. The built-in Help Guide explains how to fix this, though the steps may be a bit technical.
  • On macOS 10.7 (Lion), EagleFiler disables atomic (safe) saves for plain-text and RTF files to avoid triggering file-versioning bugs that can interfere with simultaneous editing in other apps (e.g., TextEdit).
  • If you switch sources while viewing search results, EagleFiler exits search mode by default; an advanced preference can restore the previous behavior.

Recent fixes and enhancements

  • Documentation and screenshots refreshed to reflect UI changes.
  • Resolved an issue where mailbox rebuilds could hang when the referenced file was missing.
  • Corrected an import bug for legacy Apple Mail .mbox packages when using Scan for New Files.
  • Eliminated a rare condition that could create duplicate records for the same file.
  • Shortened overly long window titles when many sources were selected.
  • Default monospace font for plain text changed to Menlo at 11 pt.
  • Improved compatibility of the Spotlight importer with FoxTrot.
  • Worked around an OS-level bug so smart-mailbox capture from Apple Mail functions again.
  • Improved library shutdown behavior so active operations don’t prevent closing.
  • Added a preference to skip indexing files that cause Core PDF to hang (TextToolSkippedNames).
  • Added a preference to avoid drawing colored backgrounds when saving web pages as PDF (PDFWebBackgrounds).
  • Added an option to log duplicate-import errors without automatically opening the Errors window (ErrorsOpenForDuplicates).
  • Restored the ability to clear search results when changing sources with an advanced flag (ClearSearchWhenChangingSources).
  • Stopped using atomic saves for plain text/RTF on Lion to avoid versioning conflicts.
  • Added an AppleScript-accessible way to empty a library’s Trash.
  • Capture hotkey now works with Opera 11.50.
  • Introduced an Import From Scanner helper script — save it as an application and point your scanner software (for example, a Fujitsu ScanSnap Manager) at it so incoming scans prompt for metadata and are imported automatically.
  • Added a Remove Duplicate Files script to help clean libraries.
  • Viewer now shows expanded vCard details (categories, notes, phonetic/maiden/related names, related dates, social-profile URLs, etc.).
  • Refined Tag Cloud appearance (fonts, styling, and color choices) for better readability.

Final note

EagleFiler is a lightweight but powerful option for anyone moving toward a paperless workflow. It stores content in standard formats for interoperability while adding tools for tagging, searching, and protecting your information.
