Quick overview of DownAlbum
DownAlbum is a browser extension and set of utilities created by inDream that streamlines saving media from social networks. Instead of downloading images and videos one at a time, this tool pulls multiple files at once, lets you customize filenames and ordering, and packages collections for offline storage. It’s useful for creating backups of online albums or archiving large sets of shared media.
Platforms supported
DownAlbum works with most widely used social sites. Examples of supported destinations include:
- Ask.fm
Types of content it can extract
The extension detects and exports different album types and embedded media depending on the site. For Facebook it can capture content from:
- Message threads
- Groups
- Search results
- Albums
- Photos of / Tagged photos
- Videos
For Instagram it handles:
- Video
- Photo
- Album
Download modes and options
You trigger the downloader from the page you want (an album or profile) and choose one of several modes to match how much content you need:
- Export last album
- Load from a specific ID
- Download without auto-load
- Normal Download
Other optional behaviors let you include metadata and optimize the output:
- Compress data to reduce archive size
- Optimize very large albums for smoother processing
- Load tags along with media
- Include comments when available
- Save captions with each item
To finish, save the resulting page using the browser’s “Web Page, Complete” export so all referenced assets are preserved.
Renaming, ordering, and troubleshooting
DownAlbum provides simple post-processing tools when items arrive out of order or when the page viewer (fancyBox) fails to initialize:
- ReStyle and ChangeName let you rename files in a numerical sequence so they sort correctly.
- ChangeName can also flip the sequence to reverse the image order.
These options help correct ordering problems without re-downloading the entire set.
How to store and reuse downloads
You can save the collected files in different formats for later use:
- Save the HTML page with dragged images if you want a browsable snapshot
- Create a compressed archive (ZIP) for long-term storage
When you need more data later, unzip the archive, adjust settings as required, and start a new download session.
Practical benefits
Using DownAlbum automates what would otherwise be a slow, manual process of saving dozens or hundreds of photos and videos. It’s especially helpful for creating backups of important social media content in case originals are lost or accounts change.
