Overview
Distant Horizons is a Minecraft mod available on CurseForge that extends how far the game renders the world. Instead of simply increasing vanilla render distance, it adds a scalable level-of-detail system so you can view terrain and player-built constructions much farther away with minimal impact on frame rate and system resources.
What the mod provides
- Enables extremely long-range viewing by rendering simplified versions of distant terrain and structures, reducing the performance cost of very high render distances.
- Preserves visibility of player-built creations at long range so bases and landmarks remain recognizable.
- Lets you adjust fog settings, including an option to change the fog’s vertical height or turn fog on and off.
Important limitations and compatibility notes
- Does not support shader packs; shader compatibility is not available at this time.
- Multiplayer works only on the client side, so servers do not need a corresponding mod installation for clients to benefit.
- The mod requires chunks to be explored or loaded for it to render distant areas properly.
- Some fine detail is lost at extreme distances (this is a deliberate LOD trade-off and is usually hard to notice unless you zoom in).
Level-of-Detail updates (1.19.4 and 1.20.2)
The updates for Minecraft 1.19.4 and 1.20.2 introduced and refined the LOD (level-of-detail) mechanics. Those improvements allow the game to:
- Render simplified geometry and textures at far distances so you can zoom out much farther without a large performance hit.
- Apply improved transitions between detailed and simplified render layers to keep distant visuals coherent.
Practical advice for use
- Expect much higher render distances than the vanilla cap (around 32), similar in effect to what OptiFine enables but designed to avoid the same performance penalty.
- Because Distant Horizons uses LODs, it is suitable for less powerful systems; however, extremely large render distances may still show reduced detail at a distance.
- Keep in mind the mod is actively developed; additional features and broader compatibility (for example, shader support) may be added later.
Summary
Distant Horizons expands how far you can see in Minecraft by introducing an efficient LOD system, offering a far-reaching view with low resource cost while maintaining visibility of player-built content. It’s a client-side enhancement that trades small amounts of distant detail for significantly extended render range; shader compatibility and server-side integration are not currently supported.
