App overview
Distance & Area Tracker is a free app that records how far and how much ground you cover during an outing — whether you're strolling around town, going for a run, or driving to a favorite spot. It logs distance and calculates area for measured routes so you can review your trip afterward.
Required permissions and ideal conditions
Before you start using the app, grant it access to your device’s location services. For best results, use the app outdoors in relatively large open spaces; measurements are most reliable when covering an area of roughly 10,000 square feet (or larger).
Measurements and display options
- Choose between imperial and metric measurements for both distance and area.
- Turn on the map overlay to view your route visually while you measure.
Exporting, importing, and cross-device use
- Save measured areas as KML files if you want to open them in mapping tools such as Google Earth or Google Maps.
- To move a measurement between phones, export it in DAMEF format so the receiving device can import and display it.
Reliability and limitations
This tool can be inconsistent at times. While it works well for many outdoor activities, users have reported intermittent inaccuracies and unreliable behavior on some devices or in certain environments. Keep that in mind when relying on the app for precise measurements.
Tips for better results
- Make sure GPS is enabled and that the device has a clear view of the sky.
- Avoid starting measurements in very small or heavily obstructed areas.
- Export your important measurements immediately so you have a backup copy.
