Overview of the Match
Dead by Daylight is a four-versus-one horror experience where one player assumes the role of a lethal Killer and the other four play Survivors trying to flee. Matches begin once everyone has picked a character, and the core loop is simple: Killers hunt and capture, while Survivors cooperate to power the exits and escape.
Roles and win conditions
- Killer: Uses unique powers and abilities to hunt Survivors, incapacitate them, and place them on sacrificial hooks to feed the Entity.
- Survivors: Cannot injure the Killer directly. Their goal is to repair five generators scattered around the map to power the exit gates, then make their way to those exits and get out alive.
Tools Survivors can use
Survivors can scavenge and employ helpful gear found around the map:
- Map — helps locate exits and navigate the level.
- Toolbox — provides tools to speed up generator repairs and perform sabotage.
- Keys — can unlock special gates or chests, offering alternate escape options.
- Flashlight — useful for blinding or distracting the Killer in critical moments.
- Chests — randomized loot containers that often hold med‑kits, items, or other useful supplies.
Items like toolboxes and maps are especially valuable for accelerating repairs and opening exits; chests can yield med‑kits that extend a Survivor’s chances of surviving longer encounters.
Characters, perks, and match start
Each playable character comes with a profile that lists their name and three unique Perks. Perks are passive or active abilities that shape playstyle and create advantages in specific situations. After character selection, the match begins immediately and players focus on their shared objectives without cutscenes or sidequests.
Why teamwork matters
Dead by Daylight emphasizes cooperation. Survivors must coordinate healing, distraction, and repair tasks while avoiding the Killer. Since they lack offensive tools against the Killer, strategy, timing, and communication are essential to outmaneuver the hunter and free teammates from hooks.
Killer advantages and map awareness
All Killers possess some form of aura-reading that can reveal the positions of key objects such as generators, hooks, and hex totems. This mechanic can make it easier for Killers to track Survivor activity even when Survivors are hidden or out of line of sight, increasing the challenge of sneaking or rushing objectives.
Endgame Collapse and timers
When an exit gate is opened, a countdown called the Endgame Collapse begins. Survivors generally have two minutes from the moment a gate is powered to evacuate; failure to escape within that window can force a sudden‑death scenario that heavily favors the Killer.
Sadako Rising — Ringu-inspired mobile chapter
The Sadako Rising update introduces The Onryō (Sadako Yamamura) as a new Killer who uses televisions to teleport and ambush Survivors with stealthy, vengeful tactics. The update also adds a Survivor named Yoichi Asakawa, whose perks focus on supporting teammates and evading threats.
Limited-time activities and unlockables
The Sadako Rising chapter includes time-limited events and cosmetic rewards. Players can earn exclusive items such as a themed portrait and frame, a Sadako crossover torso, and other event-limited cosmetics while experiencing the new mechanics and map elements introduced in this chapter.
