Quick snapshot of the experience
Contra: Evolution is a fast-paced 2D run-and-gun title that sends you into a hostile jungle environment in South Africa. You take on the role of a soldier facing waves of invaders across multiple stages, choosing from a roster of playable combatants as you progress to increasingly intense encounters.
World and playable characters
This iteration offers several soldier avatars to pick from, each allowing you to tackle the campaign from a slightly different perspective. Levels vary in layout and mood, culminating in climactic boss battles that test reflexes and resource management.
How the action plays out
Combat follows classic side-scrolling conventions: you advance through stages while dodging enemy fire and retaliating. Unlike the original games, your character in this version fires continuously, so your attention is freed to focus on movement, timing jumps, and deploying special abilities. Some segments shift perspective into an over-the-shoulder, third-person view to break up the forward-scrolling action. When you lose a life, your weapon loadout reverts back to the basic starting armament, encouraging careful play and conserving power-ups.
Weapons, upgrades, and threat progression
You begin with a simple single-shot weapon, and scattered power-ups upgrade your firepower and add new attack options. Enemies and environmental hazards grow tougher as you move forward, ultimately leading to a final showdown with a major boss at the stage’s end.
Controls and input options
Designed for touchscreens, the interface keeps things minimal so the screen remains uncluttered.
- Movable thumbstick: a floating joystick you can position for comfort
- Classic D-pad: a fixed directional pad for traditional inputs
- Thumb stick: a conventional on-screen stick for steady control
Each scheme aims to suit different play styles, whether you prefer fixed controls or a more flexible layout.
Nostalgic appeal
Fans of the original Contra titles will recognize familiar pacing and level design cues. The combination of relentless enemy waves, platforming tactics, and occasional viewpoint changes is intended to evoke the same rush that made the early entries memorable, while streamlining combat for mobile play.
