Premise and objective
Metal Slug 2 casts you as a soldier of the Regular Army who must stop General Donald Marden’s renewed bid for power. Picking up after the events of the original game, this sequel adds an extraterrestrial twist: Marden has enlisted alien forces to try again. Your mission is to battle through waves of rebels and strange foes, advance through each stage, and take down the final boss to halt the coup.
How the game plays
The core loop remains arcade-style run-and-gun action: sprint through levels, blast enemies with a variety of weapons, hop into vehicles, and reach the stage’s end to face the boss. A new mission mode lets you select stages to replay, and the pacing emphasizes fast reflexes, continual enemy spawns, and explosive set pieces.
Selectable soldiers
Choose one of four squad members to play as in mission mode:
- Sgt. Eri Kasamoto — a S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. operative with close-quarters skills.
- Sgt. First Class Fiolina Germi — another S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. trooper bringing unique abilities.
- Capt. Marco Rossi — a veteran from the Peregrine Falcons whose firepower is reliable.
- Lt. Tarma Roving — a P.F. Squad pilot with a fast, mobile playstyle.
Weapons and rideable machines
New offensive options and mounts expand the combat:
- A jet fighter equipped with air-to-air missiles gives high-speed, airborne firepower.
- A bipedal tank capable of massive jumps offers an unusual, agile heavy-armor option.
- A cannon-mounted camel provides ground-based, mounted gunnery for select sections. New weapons include an armor-piercing projectile, incendiary bombs, and a laser weapon to diversify how you dispatch foes.
Allies, pickups, and unusual effects
Several non-player characters can assist you, and pickups alter your status:
- Eating certain food items will change the character’s appearance and make them temporarily larger.
- Purple-tinged enemy attacks can transform your soldier into a mummy-like form.
- Support NPCs such as Second Lieutenant Ichimonji can appear; in his case he generates powerful energy bursts that shred nearby enemies.
Known problems and shortcomings
Despite its additions, the title has a few technical and control-related drawbacks reported by players:
- Frame rate stutters and occasional black screens have been reported, particularly during encounters with the final boss.
- The control scheme can feel imprecise at times, making tight platforming and aiming more difficult than intended.
Summary verdict
Metal Slug 2 builds on the original with a distinct identity: fresh characters, new weapons, and unconventional vehicles give it expanded variety and replay value. It recycles some elements from the first game, but the additional content makes this installment stand apart. Keep in mind the reported performance hitches and control quirks, which can impact the experience during intense battles.
