Premise and player role
BLACK throws you into a shadowed realm after a devastating accident. You assume the role of the lone survivor, stranded among unsettling inhabitants and strange landscapes. Early in the story an enigmatic creature discovers you, and the choices you make shape your relationship with that being and the direction the narrative takes.
Where you can play it
This title was created rapidly as a game-jam project, so it wasn’t built for console release. Available desktop builds include:
- Linux
- macOS
- Windows
A suggested alternative
If you want a different, more action-oriented horror experience, consider:
- Dead Rising 2: Off the Record — paid
Other games to try
If you’re drawn to short, story-driven horror with different levels of polish, these may appeal:
- The Letter — a more produced, anime-influenced visual novel
- (Don't) Open Your Eyes — a smaller indie horror title focused on mood and choices
Playtime and replayability
A single run of BLACK is brief, typically lasting about 15–30 minutes. The story branches heavily: there are nine unique endings, so multiple playthroughs are recommended to piece together the fuller narrative and uncover different outcomes.
Presentation, writing, and atmosphere
As an indie jam entry, BLACK leans on atmosphere over slick production values. Expect simple visuals and occasional roughness in the dialogue. That said, the game succeeds at creating an eerie, ambiguous mood and delivers a compact, thought-provoking story for players willing to overlook some polish issues.
