AuthPass — Desktop-focused password vault
AuthPass is an open-source password manager designed primarily for desktop use. Created by independent developer Herbert Poul, it runs as a standalone application and can store credentials in platform key stores (KeyStore / KeyChain) with optional biometric protection. It is compatible with popular KeePass database formats and can synchronize vaults using common cloud backends.
Supported vault formats
- kdbx 4.x compatibility
- kdbx 3.x compatibility
Where you can store and sync your vaults
- WebDAV-hosted storage
- Dropbox synchronization
- Google Drive integration
- Local files on your machine
What it lets you do
- Save time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) used for two-factor authentication alongside regular credentials.
- Create strong, unique passwords with the built-in generator.
- Keep separate vault files for different purposes (for example, work vs personal) or use a single shared file across accounts and devices.
- View and manage all your account credentials in a single interface so you don’t have to hunt through multiple sources.
Stability and project status
AuthPass is still in active development. That means you may encounter occasional bugs or rough edges, but the core functionality is usable. As an open-source project, it does not impose artificial feature limits, display ads, or require subscriptions. Be prepared to tolerate occasional issues while the project matures.
Control and cross-device use
You decide where your sensitive data lives — choose a local file or any of the supported cloud options. Cross-platform support allows you to sync and access the same vault across your devices so you won’t lose track of important credentials.
Alternatives and recommendation
If you want to explore other tools, 3uTools is a freely available option to consider. For users comfortable with community-driven software and occasional instability, AuthPass is worth trying as a privacy-respecting, flexible password manager.
