Brief summary

Apple ARKit is a smartphone framework that extends augmented reality functionality on iPhones. It combines the device camera with motion-sensor input (CoreMotion) to provide more precise, real-time detection of elements in a user’s environment and to enable richer AR experiences.

How it works

ARKit fuses visual data from the camera with inertial measurements from CoreMotion to track the phone’s position and nearby objects continuously. This sensor fusion lets applications place virtual content accurately and respond to changes in the scene as they occur.

Primary capabilities

  • Estimate ambient light levels in the environment to help virtual content match real-world illumination.
  • Recognize and track three-dimensional objects so AR elements can interact with real items.
  • Detect and map horizontal surfaces to place virtual items stably on tables, floors, and other flat planes.

Development status

This software is currently undergoing beta testing and may receive updates that change performance, features, or APIs before a final public release.

Suggested alternative

  • Recommended replacement: SPSS — trial version available.
