Multiple file versions in distributions

I do not understand the need to include multiple versions of Linux Libertine fonts in a distribution zip. The reason is simple: a user has to choose which version of the font files to include. Only the latest version should be included. Also, the filenaming convention should be amended; the version number should be dropped from the filename. The version numbering should be contained as metadata within the font file. That way, when a user extracts files from a zip archive, s/he will see the latest fonts, know which fonts to replace, and be ready to go.
