This project has created scientific firmware for the HP-20b and HP-30b business calculators.

WP 34S turns either of these calculators into a powerful keystroke programmable scientific device. According to our customers, it's the most powerful and fastest RPN scientific pocket calculator ever built.

WP 34S is alive and stable since 2011. We have succeeded in satisfying the most picky users - read about their experiences on http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/forum-8.html. Since 2014, WP 34S runs in version 3.3. Our customers confirm its documentation is excellent and comprehensive (see feedback); a full-color printed edition is available from https://www.amazon.com/dp/153366238X since 2018-10-15. Alternatively, you can get a personalized pdf-manual for a ≥ 9 US$ donation here.

We have also produced the WP 31S which is derived from the WP 34S source code. This is an entry-level scientific calculator. Its printed manual is available from https://www.amazon.com/dp/1499231164 .

User Reviews

  • I am no longer a student or a scientific professional since I am retired. From my original HP 29c of the late-70's used in school to my latest HP 32s used at work and all the models I had in between, I couldn't function without an HP calculator. I still do a lot of calculating in my hobbies but a Windows version is more in line with my current needs. The WP 34s is a powerful tool and the perfect calculator for RPN enthusiasts. The functional power is incredible. I am currently using the WP 31s as it has a simpler functional set. Both styles are worth a look. Many thanks to the creators and collaborators of this project.
  • This is a wonderful project for those interested in high end scientific/engineering calculators. Any seasoned long-time user of HP's RPN is likely to enjoy the rich function set of the WP-34S, and the familiar programming model. Since it also includes the integer based functions from the 16C, it is a handy tool for programmers. The only downside to this project is the relatively poor quality of the HP-30B keyboard. One cannot expect to get many years of reliable use from these because of this. The hardware investment is very modest. I spent about 30 bucks on a new (NOS) HP 30B from eBay in 2019. A vinyl keyboard overlay is about 6. And I was able to flash the firmware with nothing more than an FTDI USB/TTY converter (3.3V) and some Dupont jumpers which I had on hand, but which can be had for about 5. A calculator that is more powerful than a 42S & a 16C combined for under 50 bucks is attractive, plus it's just fun to do the modding. Speaking of modding, there are several options one can add for increased functionality with just a few more parts, including RT clock, stopwatch, IR printing, and USB interface. Thanks to all the contributors who've made this available to the community!
  • Absolutely magnificent good work. A perfect calculator project. A briliant idea as well, to replace a half stupid hardware with a big brain transplantation. In this project I can smell the engineering art of HP in the late 70th to 80th. Delivered with a professional documentation, which seems to have the approach to be comprehensive, which is quite impossible in view of the wealth of functionality. And as far as I tried until now, there is no error, no single bug in the software!
  • Works with WINE on Linux!
  • A fantastic resource and powerful tool. With unprecedented accuracy, speed and feature set. The WP-34s extends the RPN model beyond my wildest imaginations while providing ease of use, excellent documentation and frequent updates. For the serious scientific handheld calculator user who preferes RPN, this stands far in advance of any alternative. That it is so inexpensive is just incredible. Well done, gentlemen!
