Refracta is an operating system designed for home computer users and for use as a system rescue and recovery disk. It provides a simple and familiar layout that most users will find very comfortable. Refracta-8 is based on Devuan GNU/Linux and uses the Devuan package repository. (Previous versions were based on Debian.)

Refractainstaller, refractasnapshot and refracta2usb are tools that allow you to customize your installation and create your own live-CD or live-USB.

  • Refracta Snapshot is great! Check pkgmaster.devuan.org/devuan/pool/main/r/ for the latest version.
  • I've been successful with using Refracta Snapshot and Refracta Installer on Debian with just a couple of tweaks. The main thing is that it doesn't yet support zstd decompression of your initrd (which has become the default compression option in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf for Debian recently). You just have to edit your initramfs.conf to use gzip or xz, and then run: sudo update-initramfs -u -k all The other thing you might have to do is add certain kernel modules to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules so that it will boot from a DVD or USB drive. I had to add: isofs uas xhci_pci ehci_pci
  • It sounds great but all I get is a shell prompt instead of a desktop so I guess something's missing, sometimes I can find a snapshot thats been uploaded somewhere as with MX, but no luck yet...

  • Excellent refracta tools for building your own spin. Refracta snapshot makes it easy to take your installed system to an ISO and the installer does the job. Thank you. :-)
  • ive easily tried more than 50 distros over the years-- and at least of the apt-based distros, the best of these is truly refracta. its reliable, simple, unbloated-- and takes a lot of nonsense out of the installation process. if you want to try gnu/linux for the first time, add to your computing skills, or just have a very solid, friendly base to remaster from-- i cant recommend anything above refracta-- unless its a refracta derivative. (...of which there are several, because refracta is fun to remix.) theres no exaggeration here; ive never enjoyed a single distro more.
