WHAT IS ExTiX 25.7, 25.3, 24.12, 23.5 and 16.5 64 bit - five versions? NEWS 250701 ABOUT ExTiX Deepin 25.7 Live BASED ON Deepin 25 STABLE I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (250701). This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 25 STABLE (latest version) released by Deepin Technology on June 26, 2025. See: https://www.deepin.org/en/deepin-25/ ExTiX 25.7 works in the same way as all other ExTiX versions. I.e. you can install it to hard drive while running the system live. Use Refracta Installer for that. You can also create your own live installable Deepin 25 system with Refracta Snapshot. (Using ExTiX 25.7 as a "base system/template"). So easy that a ten year old child can do it! NEW FUNCTIONS etc. in ExTiX 25.7 Deepin: 1. VirtualBox Guest Additions are NOT pre-installed. No real need for them since you can run ExTiX in full screen in VirtualBox by just changing the screen resolution. 2. You can run ExTiX from RAM. Use boot alternative 2 (load to RAM) or Advanced. A wonderful way to run Linux if you have enough RAM. Everything will be super fast. When ExTiX has booted up you can remove the DVD or USB stick. 3. I’ve added Synaptic Package Manager. A must I think. 4. You can ONLY use Refracta Installer for hard drive installations. You can not use Deepin Installer. You may be able to start the program after installing it with "sudo apt install deepin-installer", but the installation to hard drive will fail. That's because my build of Deepin 25 differ from the original in some respects. 4b. You can, however, install Calamares Installer and use it for your hard drive installation (instead of Refracta Installer). About Calamares: "Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Calamares aims to be easy, usable & beautiful while remaining independent of any particular Linux distribution". Install Calamares with this command: "sudo apt install calamares calamares-settings-deepin" For Calamares to work properly you'll have to edit /etc/calamares/settings.conf. Remove line 81. Before using Calamares Installer you must backup the folder /etc/apt. If you don't do that you can't upgrade the ExTiX/Deepin system after the installation (using Calamares Installer). 5. You can watch Netflix while running Firefox. 6. You can install ExTiX Deepin also in VirtualBox/VMware using Refracta Installer. NOTE 1: ExTiX 25.7 Deepin runs MUCH better live from a USB stick or from hard drive after a hard drive installation. I mean compared to running ExTiX Deepin virtually in VirtualBox/VMware. 7. In version 25.7 I've included Refracta Installer. Use it in VirtualBox if you want to have an EXACT copy of ExTiX Deepin installed. You don't have to "chroot" to install Grub. Just choose to "Copy Grub files" when asked to. Watch this movie: https://www.extix.se/deepin/extix-refracta-installer.mp4 NOTE 2: While installing ExTiX to hard drive using Refracta Installer you should keep the username user and the passwords for user and root. You can always change that afterwards. UNIQUE I may add that there is no other (good) LIVE English remaster of Deepin 25 STABLE. ExTiX 25.7 is most certainly unique because it allows you to make your own Deepin 25 system. I.e. create a new ISO. Your own. A YouTube REVIEW of ExTiX 23.9 WITH Deepin 23 BETA I must share a video on YouTube about ExTiX 23.9, which was released 230903. The video will give you a complete picture of ExTiX’s functions and benefits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsXb31CeBGQ&t=1402s AN ENTHUSIASTIC REVIEW of ExTiX 22.12 with Deepin 20.8 I must share a video on YouTube about ExTiX 22.12, which was released 221219. The video will give you a complete picture of ExTiX’s functions and benefits. See the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsUB_jk8kms You can also watch a YouTube video about ExTiX 23.9 with Deepin 23 BETA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsXb31CeBGQ&t=1390s #################################################### NEWS ABOUT ExTiX 25.3 Build 250305 with the KDE Plasma Desktop environment and Ubuntu Desktop together with Waydroid ("WayDroid lets you launch a complete Android system on Linux with Google Play Services so you can install your favorite apps"), Refracta Installer and Refracta Snapshot. 1. ExTiX KDE Plasma is based on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS "Noble Numbat". KDE-plasma-desktop and the Ubuntu Desktop (with Wayland) is used as Desktop environments. All packages have been updated to the latest version by 250305. Kernel 6.13.5-amd64-exton and Ubuntu's original kernel 6.8.0-54-generic is used. To use Waydroid you'll have to run kernel 6.8.0-54-generic and log in to the Ubuntu Desktop with Wayland. Waydroid doesn't work under X11. 2. I have NOT pre-installed Waydroid with Google Play Store. That's because you'll have to register your computer with your own Gmail account to be able to run Google Play Store. Everything is ready in ExTiX 25.3 for installing Waydroid though. Only two commands are needed: "sudo apt update" followed by "sudo apt install waydroid". To be able to install GAPPS (Google Play Store etc) you have to follow the advice's here: https://www.howtogeek.com/waydroid-android-apps-on-linux/ READ MORE about it at https://www.extix.se After the registration of your computer you can use Google Play Store for installing the Android apps you want. NOTE: Not ALL apps will run using Waydroid. Furthermore Waydroid won't run live (from a DVD or USB stick) or in VirtualBox. 3. Other included important/useful packages are: GParted, GCC and other compilation tools so that you can install packages from source. Furthermore all multimedia codecs. Everything the average Linux user could wish for I would say. 4. The best thing with ExTiX 25.3 is that while running the system live (from a DVD/USB stick) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Waydroid system. Very easy to do. 5. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. With those installed you can run ExTiX KDE in full screen in VirtualBox. NOTE: You can't run Waydroid in VirtualBox. NOTE: In the previous ExTiX KDE from 220922 I had Anbox installed. "Anbox is a container-based approach to boot a full Android system on a regular GNU/Linux system like Ubuntu". However Anbox is no longer actively developed. ##################################################### NEWS 241223 ABOUT ExTiX 24.12 with LXQt 2.0 ::: Build 241223 I have made a new version of ExTiX ("The Ultimate Linux System"). I call it ExTiX 24.12 LXQt Live System. (The previous LXQt version was 23.11 from 231123). ExTiX 24.12 is based on Ubuntu 24.10 ("Oracular Oriole"). Ubuntu 24.10 will only be supported until July 2025. I really wanted ExTiX 24.12 to be based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which is supported until June 2029, but to be able to upgrade LXQt from version 1.4 to 2.0 I had to upgrade the whole system! REFRACTA SNAPSHOT The best thing with ExTiX 24.12 is that while running the system live (from a DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu 24.10 system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is quite light. The ISO file is of only 2500 MB, which means that you can run the system super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 3 or Advanced options >> load to RAM. LXQt 2.0 is used as Desktop Environment (DE). Kernel 6.12.6-amd64-exton is used. VIRTUALBOX VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed, which means (among other things) that you can run ExTiX 24.12 in full screen in VirtualBox. CALAMARES INSTALLER Another big new thing in this version of ExTiX is that I have installed Calamares Installer. "Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Calamares aims to be easy, usable & beautiful while remaining independent of any particular Linux distribution". Nevertheless I've kept Refracta Installer. Use the installer you prefer. Study all pre-installed packages in ExTiX 24.12: https://www.extix.se/extix-lxqt-installed-packages-241223.txt #################################################### NEWS 230510 ABOUT ExTiX LXQt Mini 23.5 uefi - Build 230510 I've made a new "mini" version of ExTiX. It is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Ubuntu 22.04 will be supported until April 2027. That's why ExTiX 23.5 isn't based on Ubuntu 23.0.4. The ISO file is of only 1550 MB, which is good if you want to run the system super fast from RAM. The best thing with ExTiX 23.5 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu 22.04 system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! ExTiX 23.5 uses kernel 6.3.1-amd64-exton. This uefi version of ExTiX is made especially for older computers with low RAM and for running in VirtualBox/VMware. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed, which means (among other things) that you can run ExTiX 23.5 in full screen in VirtualBox. Study all pre-installed packages in ExTiX 23.5: https://www.extix.se/extix-lxqt-mini-installed-packages-230510.txt ####################################################### NEWS 181020 ABOUT my Ubuntu Build (ExTiX) from 161203 for Intel Compute Sticks Today I was about to make a new version of my ExTiX Build from 161203. I quickly learned that it isn t necessary. It turns out that full support for the Intel Compute Stick is included in all kernels from version 4.11 until today s releases (4.18). Kernel 4.8.0-26-exton-IntelAtom (which was used in my build from 161203) was patched see my INFO site: https://www.extix.se/?p=208 Without patches it wouldn't have worked. Today any Linux system can run on the stick. At least all Ubuntu versions from which I have experience. This means (of course) that all ExTiX flavors can run on the stick. The only thing to think about is that the Grub boot line has to be somewhat special see my INFO site. Those of you who have installed ExTiX Build 161203 can just upgrade the system from 16.10 to 18.04.1 LTS and then install a new kernel. For example my Ubuntu kernel 4.18.12-exton, which you can download: https://exton.se/LINUX/ubuntu-kernel-64bit-4.18.12-exton.zip First open /etc/apt/sources.list with Leafpad and replace all instances of yakkety with bionic. Then run the command sudo apt update. After that you can upgrade the whole system using Synaptic. I have done it myself today so I know it works. READ MORE: https://www.extix.se/?p=208 ####################################################### ABOUT ALL VERSIONS - 250701 ExTiX Linux Live systems 64 bit are based on Debian, Ubuntu and Deepin. I have installed Deepin 25 in ExTiX 25.7 Build 250701, LXQt 2.0 (in ExTiX 24.12 Build 241223) and KDE Plasma Desktop together with the Ubuntu Desktop in an extra version of 250305 - ExTiX 25.3. Deepin is a Linux distribution/Desktop "devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users". "LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment". About KDE Frameworks: "KDE Frameworks are 60 addon libraries to Qt which provide a wide variety of commonly needed functionality in mature, peer reviewed and well tested libraries with friendly licensing terms". NOTE1: Build 161203 is only for Intel Compute Sticks - http://www.intel.se/content/www/se/sv/compute-stick/intel-compute-stick.html NOTE: While running ExTiX Deepin 25.7 and ExTiX LXQt 24.12/23.5 and ExTiX KDE/Waydroid 25.3 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Deepin/Debian/Ubuntu system. A ten year old child can do it! The system language is ENGLISH. NEWS 161203 ABOUT ExTiX for Intel Compute Sticks I have made a new special version of ExTiX 16.5, which can be used on Intel Compute Sticks. About such sticks read http://www.intel.se/content/www/se/sv/compute-stick/intel-compute-stick.html Build 161203 uses "my" kernel 4.8.0-26-exton-InteAtom with special patches, which I have Linuxium to thank for - http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/ ##################################################### MORE ABOUT ExTiX All packages have been updated to the latest version by 250701, 250305, 241223, 230510 respectively 161203. Kernel 6.15.3-amd64-exton is used in the Deepin version of ExTiX. Kernel 6.12.6-amd64-exton is used in the main LXQt version of Extix. (Kernel.org's kernel 6.12.6). Kernel 6.13.5-amd64/6.8.54-generic is used in the KDE/Waydroid version of ExTiX (version 25.3). Kernel 4.8.0-26-exton-IntelAtom is used in ExTiX Build 161203 for the Intel Compute Stick. 2. Only Firefox is installed as Web Browser.(You can now watch Netflix in Firefox). ExTiX Deepin uses Google Chrome though. 3. I have replaced Ubuntu's installer Ubiquity with Calamares Installer. "Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases". NOTE1: Refracta Installer is used in ExTiX Deepin 25.7. Refracta installer is also used in 23.5 LXQt Mini, ExTiX 24.12 LXQt (as an alternative) and 25.3 KDE/Waydroid. 4. Other included important/useful packages are: LibreOffice, Thunderbird, GParted, Brasero, SMPlayer, GCC and other compilation tools so that you can install packages from source. Furthermore "all" multimedia codecs. Everything the average Linux user could wish for I would say. You can of course install anything you like, even while running the system live. I.e. from a DVD or a USB stick. 5. While running ExTiX 25.7 Deepin, ExTiX LXQt 24.12/23.5 and ExTiX KDE/Waydroid 25.3 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Debian/Deepin system. WHAT'S SO SPECIAL about ExTiX? 1. The ExTiX ISO's are ISO-hybrids, which means that they can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can even run ExTiX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! NOTE: Not as regards Build 161203 for Intel Compute Sticks. Should be installed to a USB stick using Rufus or Etcher in Windows. 2. Another big improvement is that ExTiX can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You'll need at least 4 GB RAM to run ExTiX that way. Running from RAM means that the system will run faster than from DVD or USB stick. Everything will be superfast I would say! 3. ExTiX is now more stable than ever. 4. The installation program Ubiquity (live installer) is now working as intended in Build 161203. 5. While running ExTiX Deepin 25.7, ExTiX LXQt 24.12, ExTiX LXQt Mini 23.5 and ExTiX KDE/Waydroid 25.3 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Linux system. So easy that a ten your child can do it! LOG IN to the Deepin, LXQt repectively KDE/Waydroid Desktop You can run ExTiX live as the ordinary user live or as root (super user). Log in from LightDM, LXDM respectively Slim's Login Manager as root with password root or as user with password live. During a hard drive installation you will of course get the opportunity to create your own normal user. NOTE: In ExTiX Deepin 25.7 and ExTiX KDE 25.3 the password for user/live is live. In ExTiX LXQt 24.12 and LXQt Mini Build 230510 the passwords are user/live and root/root. USB installation Read my instruction: https://www.extix.se/usb-install/ REFRACTA SNAPSHOT While running ExTiX live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu/Debian/Deepin system. A ten year child can do it! Watch a slideshow - https://extix.se/extix-refracta-slideshow.gif (The slideshow is for ExTiX KDE but Refracta Snapshot works in the same way in ExTiX Deepin, KDE/Waydroid and LXQt).
