I have tried installing both IBM Java JRE 1.3.1 (a few different versions) and Blackdown Java 1.2 and 1.3, in Debian Sarge, Etch, and MEPIS 3.4-3. The problem I always encounter is that when starting the vvenrolluser script using thos older versions of Java, the first window that appears seems frozen. It does not respond to any mouse clicks or keyboard presses. I have only tried thei with Debian-based distributions, so it may be something specific to Debian's libraries or kernel. Also, I have only tested with the KDE desktop (versions 3.3 and 3.4), so I wasn't sure if this was a problem or not. Would the program run better in Gnome or another desktop environment? I assumed since the packages were made for Mandrake, they would be KDE friendly. I can get the ViaVoice screen to display properly using Java 1.4.2 (already installed in MEPIS 3.4-3). However I have not tested it very extensively. Does anyone know of any problems this would cause later on? Or should I just use whatever version seems to be working? I was not sure how version specific the Java Jar files were with ViaVoice. I didn't want to do a lot of training and have to start over. Thanks, Scott |
