AMD Embedded Solutions (AES) is pleased to announce a new release of the AES XvBA Reference System Installer which automates installation of a reference Ubuntu system suitable for evaluation of AMD's XvBA (X-Video Bitstream Acceleration). Changes since the previous release ---------------------------------- Support for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal:: +mkusb.sh+ now works with the Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal alternate installer and a package archive (+natty.tgz+) is provided. Catalyst 11-7 and 11-8:: Catalyst 11-7 and 11-8 releases of the AMD Proprietary Linux Graphics Driver are included in the package archives for all supported distributions. Prepared images for Ubuntu 11.04:: Prepared installer images for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal are available for download. This simplifies use of the AES automated installer as it's no longer necessary to use +mkusb.sh+ or to have a host Linux system. Preparation of USB disk images:: The +DEVICE+ argument to +mkusb.sh+ can name an image file, rather than just a block device, in which case it creates a disk image which can be written to USB disk using +dd+ on Linux or a tool like _Image Writer for Windows_. Preparation of ISO images:: The +DEVICE+ argument to +mkusb.sh+ can name an ISO image file, in which case it creates an ISO image which can be written to DVD. Use without AMD graphics:: The installer can be used on a system without a supported AMD graphics adapter. This is useful for testing and/or for installation in a virtual machine. The AMD Proprietary Linux Graphics Driver will be installed but left unconfigured. Realtek r8168 driver:: The r8169 driver included in the Ubuntu 11.04 installer and default kernel package is unreliable when used with a Realtek RTL8111/8168B NIC. The Realtek r8168 driver is now included in the installer and in the Ubuntu 11.04 package archive. It will be used by the installer and installed on the target system in preference to the r8169. For more information, see the README here: http://xvbat.sourceforge.net/d-i Enjoy! Tim Writer AMD Embedded Solutions |

Hi, A new version of xvba-video, the XvBA backend to VA-API, is now available at: <http://www.splitted-desktop.com/~gbeauchesne/xvba-video/> Version 0.8.0 - 14.Jun.2011 * Relicense code to GPLv2 * Require fglrx >= 8.80.5 (Catalyst 10.12) Some code were removed to comply with AMD recommendations and current NDA. They will be reintegrated at a later point (based on the internal SVN history) when the relevant features are public knowledge. xvba-video is now available under the GPLv2 license. Source tarballs are available at the above-mentioned URL but also through GIT: <http://code.splitted-desktop.com/git/?p=xvba-video.git;a=summary> I didn't have the time to clean up all the workarounds. You can try to remove them but please don't cry if things start to crash or work not as well as 0.7.8. This could work with earlier versions of Catalyst too but it's not a good idea to stick with such ancient drivers anyway. You would miss other bug fixes that are not mentionned. I left the Evergreen workarounds in just in case Llano needs similar treatment. Then, don't forget to update the PCI IDs accordingly. Regards, Gwenole. |

Earlier this week, AMD released XvBA to the public. XvBA (X-Video Bitstream Acceleration) is AMD's video acceleration API for Linux. It allows Linux applications to take advantage of the UVD engine in AMD GPUs to accelerate video decoding. It has been posted to the Open Source Zone on AMD Developer Central: http://developer.amd.com/ZONES/OPENSOURCE/Pages/default.aspx Two separate packages have been release: XvBA SDK - header file and XvBA Specification http://developer.amd.com/Downloads/xvba-sdk-0.74-404001.tar.gz XvBA Tools - library and sample code demonstrating use of XvBA http://xvbat.sourceforge.net/ Use of XvBA requires the ATI Catalyst Proprietary Display Driver which can be downloaded from AMD: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx Enjoy!
