Category: DVD related problem Group: v1.0 Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Stuart D. Gathman (customdesigned) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Errors hang USB drive Initial Comment: DVDs with minor errors (every one in my collection except a brand new Incredibles and every one I've ever rented) play fine on Windows with this drive - there is a barely noticeable dropout of sound and/or pause of video when it gets to the bad spot. With xine on Linux (or vobcopy - so it is not a video or audio output problem), the playback or copy freezes when it gets to the bad spot, and the drive begins retrying endlessly. /var/log/messages has these errors: May 24 09:18:39 fairfax kernel: scsi2: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 0b a7 00 00 00 3f 00 May 24 09:18:39 fairfax kernel: Current sd0b:01: sense key Medium Error May 24 09:18:39 fairfax kernel: Additional sense indicates L-EC uncorrectable error May 24 09:18:39 fairfax kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:01, sector 3054592 May 24 09:19:01 fairfax kernel: scsi2: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 0b a7 3f 00 00 01 00 May 24 09:19:01 fairfax kernel: Current sd0b:01: sense key Medium Error May 24 09:19:01 fairfax kernel: Additional sense indicates L-EC uncorrectable error May 24 09:19:01 fairfax kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:01, sector 3054844 May 24 09:19:26 fairfax kernel: scsi2: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 0b a7 00 00 00 02 00 May 24 09:19:26 fairfax kernel: Current sd0b:01: sense key Medium Error May 24 09:19:26 fairfax kernel: Additional sense indicates L-EC uncorrectable error May 24 09:19:26 fairfax kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:01, sector 3054592 ... and so on until I kill the program Yes, it is a Medium Error. But the Windows software is able to skip over the errors with barely a blip on the same drive. In some cases, I am able to copy the video to the hard disk with vobcopy by cleaning and retrying the bad VOB until it finally goes. Then I can play the hard disk copy with no problems. I would be happy if there were only a way to make vobcopy skip over bad spots, but xine ought to do so also when playing straight from DVD. xine-0.99.3-4.0.rh9.rf xine-lib-1.0.1-2.0.rh9.rf libdvdread-0.9.4-6.0.rh9.rf libdvdcss-1.2.8-4.0.rh9.dag vobcopy-0.5.14-1 kernel-2.4.20-42.9.legacy Drive: Iomega USB2 Super-Drive LITE-ON Model: DVDRW SOHW-1673S Rev: JS01 patch to cdrom driver to handle drive self reporting as SCSI2: ===== drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c 1.41 vs edited ===== --- 1.41/drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c Sat Sep 27 16:24:59 2003 +++ edited/drivers/cdrom/cdrom.c Fri Jan 2 17:17:47 2004 @@ -2094,8 +2094,6 @@ case DVD_READ_STRUCT: { dvd_struct *s; int size = sizeof(dvd_struct); - if (!CDROM_CAN(CDC_DVD)) - return -ENOSYS; if ((s = (dvd_struct *) kmalloc(size, GFP_KERNEL)) == NULL) return -ENOMEM; cdinfo(CD_DO_IOCTL, "entering DVD_READ_STRUCT\n"); @@ -2115,8 +2113,6 @@ case DVD_AUTH: { dvd_authinfo ai; - if (!CDROM_CAN(CDC_DVD)) - return -ENOSYS; cdinfo(CD_DO_IOCTL, "entering DVD_AUTH\n"); IOCTL_IN(arg, dvd_authinfo, ai); if ((ret = dvd_do_auth (cdi, &ai))) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Stuart D. Gathman (customdesigned) Date: 2005-06-23 13:50 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=142072 The USB system has been extensively overhauled between 2.4 and 2.6. I tried, but I am unable to backport the error handling changes. I guess I'll have to upgrade to a 2.6 kernel to get this resolved. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Stuart D. Gathman (customdesigned) Date: 2005-06-09 23:54 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=142072 On the usb-storage mailing list, there are some recent patches that address a problem with slow error handling on slightly braindead USB enclosures that sounds exactly like mine. The patches are for kernel-2.6, but I will see if I can backport them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=109655&aid=1213742&group_id=9655 |
