wasn't this code supposed to be built as a seperate plugin so we could
have support for beta (0.5.x) as well as alpha (0.9.x) alsa versions?!

Anyway, something will have to be changed here, configure.in checks for
stable alsa but the code which will be tried to built then is written
for alsa 0.9.x 8-}
