The problem with OpenGL is that the video needs to be colourspace-converted from YUV to RGB, since OpenGL textures are RGB. Matthias Hopf, our OpenGL guru is working on using the pixel shaders of the GPU for this, which should make OpenGL and Xv more similar speedwise.
