I guess you have played with the sliders in xine's control window, but even the maximum brightness setting is not enough? If that is so, there is definitely something wrong with X, since xine just sets the Xv attributes and passes the decoded frames on to Xv. Everything from there, including image scaling, colourspace conversion and brightness/contrast setting is done by the driver or the card itself. However, there is a possible workaround: Go to the chain reaction window, which you find under Video->Post Process. There you can add some image effect plugins. Try "eq" or "eq2", which will allow you to tweak the brightness. Unfortunately, xine does not save the post processing settings, but you can pass them on startup with the --post option. Once you have found a good setting, you can store the --post option in the file ~/.xine/xinerc to make it permanent.
