And it goes to show that different people have different expectations. Since many methods have been tried, the code is hanging around somewhere. Would it not be possible to include code for several methods and let the user select which strategy they'd rather use for deactivating the screensaver? I don't _think_ I'd be bothered by the flashing numlock LED and I certainly don't mind not having the use of the numeric keypad during playback.
