I tried both of these things and there's no improvement. To help narrow down the problem I've tried playing .mp3s and .wavs with xine, and to my surprise I get exactly the same audio problem as with video. Mplayer also gives the same problems with mp3s, but it is less severe then with xine (runs for much longer before cracking). As I said before xmms plays all sound files perfectly. So the problem must be in xine.
