There are linux programs which understand the QuickTime format, it's just that video data stored inside files using the QuickTime format is frequently encoded using proprietary CODECs such as SVQ1 and SVQ3 by Sorenson. The former has apparently been reverse engineered. The latter is still being worked upon. This allows the QuickTime standard to be open or at least known, but still have files encoded in such a way that isn't. |
