Neither Xine nor Ogle turn off DMA. This is being done by the kernel, either because there were read errors trying to read the DVD or as a workaround to buggy chipsets. (Since you had this working before with a different DVD drive, I will presume your chipset is fine for use with Linux.) Also, you can run into trouble trying to share IDE devices on a single bus with devices of a different UDMA generation. You may have to connect your DVD drive on a cable of it's own, as opposed to the same cable as a HD. Also, make sure that Master and Slave are all explicitely set on your IDE devices (no Cable Selects). Check dmesg after you've started playing any DVD's with dma on to find kernel messages that might give a clue to what's happening. DMA and Xine and ogle From: michael norman <mic...@li...> To: SuSE Linux-e <sus...@su...> Hi all For a long time I have been able to get dvd play in SuSE using xine. Until recently when my Relysis dvdrom drive died. Fortunately I got a replacement AOPEN drive as the old one was still within guarantee. Unfortunately I can only get choppy dvd replay using xine and the new drive. The solution to this in the past has been to set dma on the drive. This I have done using both yast2 and hdparm from the command line. But I still get choppy dvd even immediately after setting dma on the drive, When I check whether dma is still on immediately after playing a dvd it is off again. My conclusion is that xine (and I have just repeated this using Ogle is that invoking a dvd playing programme is turning off dma before the dvd starts. I have also checked that if I set dma, don't use xine or ogle that it is still set on reboot. FWIW dvd replay with this drive with dma set is perfect in w98. But I want to watch dvds in linux. Is it really possible that both these programmes are turning off dma as soon as I use them ?. Would putting the relevant command in a startup script help ? If so which one. I am somewhat baffled.
