Perhaps a good compromise would be a notification box that pop up(non-intrusive) and goes away after a few seconds. If error, it stays until clicked. Sort of like growl.

IMO this could be good, but if it's implemented there should be a Preferences checkbox to toggle between the present behavior and this one.
Sorry, I think this is not a good idea. Usually, you want to know when your archiving task is finished and if it was successful...
