I wouldn't say that at all. wvWare has a very singular purpose - to read (and eventually write) msword docs. Which underlying OLE2 library we choose to use in order to read the document streams is irrelevant. The POI HDF project aims to do something similar to what wvWare already does. POI also does so in Java, which doesn't play well with the main driving force behind wvWare at the moment, which is the C++ AbiWord project. POI HDF is only in planning stages. wvWare is production-level quality, working code. You're free to spend your time as you'd like to.
