It probably was like "OK, let's look through the rolodex of advertising partners and of people that we did articles on and send them a mail.". The second group, containing widelands, is much smaller than the first one. And while OSS is a notable block there, it's far from forming a majority. If I were to guess, I'd say the percentage of OSS recipients (vs. all recipients) is <5%. So I do see their point in not having an extra letter.
