Hello David, Thank you for the reply. I did specify the 'delete home directories' option for the users and go the expected result. What I did not expect was the deletion of the Intranet files which are normally accessible by the superuser, in this case me. How Webmin go to do this is puzzling to me. I tried rebooting and the system could never boot up. It prompted for the root password for single mode access. I used fsck to check the file systems which have been declared clean. The reboot is still failing. The rc.sysinit reports does not execute very well. e2fsck -p /dev/hda1 results in the error message: ERROR: Couldn't open /dev/null (Read-only file system) The same error message appears for the other file systems as well. ***** The incident happened when I left Webmin running to delete the user directories of over 2000 students. I went out for a break and returned to find that my directory was empty. My username was not in the batch delete file. I have not ruled out the possibility of authorized access in my absence. Is this possible? Looks like I have to reboot using a boot disk or worse, accept that the files are gone and I have to rebuild the Intranet all over again. Webmin will delete all user home directories when the system user is deleted when the delete user home directory option is specified. It appears you have deleted the target users and their home directories. Can you still login as a normal user? If so, do a "cd" so you are in your home directory and then type pwd to see what directory you are in.
