I was having the same trouble, until I discovered that I had either= forgotten, or someone (a hacker maybe) had coopted the root password.= Change the root password from the mysql web site documentation, and try= again. I was unable to change my root password, and finally gave up using rpm -e= to uninstall mysql and reinstall, fix the root password and all was well.= Hope you don't have to do that.
