Klaus' idea for Windows looks very similar to the Unix-based solutions I saw -- redirect "java -version" to a file, parse it, and act on the results. Makes sense, but my concern is that this introduces as many additional potential points of failure as it prevents (it will save confusion from people who have the wrong version installed, but it might give false-positive errors for weird Java interpreters, and if there are permission problems with writing the temp file, it could lead to weird failures). Similarly, writing a Java program to get the version makes sense but seems awfully heavy-weight for helping prevent one relatively narrow problem area. Another possibility might be to write some kind of diagnostic script to package with VuFind, so rather than putting the version checking into the Solr start-up, we could have a separate script that looks at Java version and flags it as a potential problem. (This script could also, for example, check environment variable settings, file permissions, and so on, to make recommendations about common problems). Obviously, the disadvantage to this approach is that users need to know that the diagnostic script exists in order to take advantage of it, while diagnostics built into the start-up are automatically helpful (if they work properly).
