The environment (openSuse 12.3, 32-bit, at moment)
java -jar tightvnc-jviewer.jar -AllowClipboardTransfer -ShareDesktop -CompressionLevel=1 -JpegImageQuality=Lossless -LocalPointer=On -ColorDepth=8 -ScalingFactor=88 -password=$( read < ~/.vncl.creds ; echo $REPLY ) -host={myhost}
Substitute {myhost} for your favourite place.
ln -s tvnjviewer-2.5.2-bin/tightvnc-jviewer.jar tightvnc-jviewer.jar
When run, the remote screen just opens and I get on with my day.
Change the '5' to '7' in the ln line, and prompted for connection, and then prompted for authentication.
Same true for: ln -s tvnjviewer-2.7.2-bin/nossh/tightvnc-jviewer.jar tightvnc-jviewer.jar
i.e. Merely downloading/extracting/using 2.7.2 instead of 2.5.2 broke working scripts.
[Testing is/was simple - just change the jar called from 2.5.2. to 2.7.2.]
Delete/cancel attachment - not relevant to report. [Don't see how to delete attachment once made, accidentally.]
