Additional comments: I took my own advice and saw what happens if I turn off graphics acceleration (screen settings > advanced > troubleshoot). Running glinfo.py from the VPython examples one sees that the Microsoft software OpenGL renderer is invoked. When I try to create a sphere, I see a window frame flash briefly and disappear. Only if I increase the hardware acceleration to the point where glinfo.py shows the graphics card's OpenGL renderer active can I create a window and see a sphere. I thought it was supposed to be the case that the software OpenGL engine would produce images, just more slowly than a graphics card would do. Guess that's not the case, or lease not the case with the current beta-version code in VPython.
