I don't know anything about the autotools either, but this doesn't look 
good, indeed. Here is what I have installed in this area from Fink:

  i   autoconf                   2.60-4
  i   automake1.9                1.9.6-3
  i   libtool14                  1.5.22-1000
  i   libtool14-shlibs           1.5.22-1000
  i   m4                         1.4.5-3

What do you have there? (This is on 10.4.8/intel).
