Running version 4.4 on Windows 7 64-bit. Works fine on my desktop computer, but on my laptop (Dell E5430) it gives a "Failed to register hotkey 1, check hotkeys" error dialog followed by three more error dialogs (hotkey 2 through 4). I'm guessing that this happens because CTRL-ALT-Left, Right, Up, and Down are apparently already in use to change the screen orientation (not sure how common that is, but it came from the factory that way). I changed to ALT-Left, etc. and it is OK now. You might want to use different defaults to avoid user frustration.

Unfortunately there is no better defaults, simpler bindings like 'Alt-Left' are used by a lot of programs like Word and Outlook. Ctrl-Alt-<cursor-key> has proved to be less invasive but not universally so, as this bug proves.

So, alas, the current configuration is the best default we have found so closing as we can't fix this.

I am running into the same problem. It actually seems to be a bug in the intel graphics driver or related utility programs (in my case Intel HD Graphics 4600), as the error message will occur even after disabling the intel graphics hotkeys entirely. No other action seems to be associated with these keys and the Intel software denies rebinding the hotkeys to anything that is unlikely to cause conflicts.

The Intel HD Graphics driver appears to hold the hot-key binding even if the hot-keys are disabled. This stops VirtuaWin from being able to map to the keys that the Intel driver uses, even when it is not actually using them.
To work around this, just remap the keys in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel -> Options panel to some key combination that you don't care about then you should be able to map VirtuaWin to the key combinations that you want.

It would be great if VirtualWin could indicate which application is holding the key binding that is conflicting, but I imagine that could be quite difficult.

The Windows API does not allow you to extract hot key "owners" unfortunately.

Alt-Ctrl-Left and Alt-Ctrl-Right are reserved keys on many graphics drivers, for switching your screen orientation.
I use Win+Alt+Left and Win+Alt+Right to switch between desktops, and Shift+Win+Alt+L / Shift+Win+Alt+R to transfer a window to next/prev desktop, without keys conflict.
