Install Vega Strike 0.5.0 and ran setup with no problem.
Played the game for about an hour before going to bed. I couldn't have asked for better. Bought and sold a bit of cargo, then bought a jump drive and ran a few cargo missions. Everything worked great, so I saved my game and the next day when I tried to load my game the computer completely locked up. I couldn't close the game or even ctrl+alt+f1 to kill it. I also tried ctrl+alt+BkSpc and ctrl+alt+del, but got no response. The computer is doing something because after several seconds the cooling fan goes into overdrive. I tried starting a new game with the same results. I rerun setup and lowered the settings with the same results. I deleted and reinstalled the game with the same results. I get to the main menu fine. After I click campaign the game begins to load goes through generating universe and shows loading a few more files then the screen goes black and the music stops. I am fresh out of ideas. If it weren't for the game playing flawlessly for an hour or more I would think it to be a driver problem.

Sounds like a MESA bug I've been hitting too.
Do you know which MESA version are you using?

In any case, try disabling shaders if you didn't, it should help.
And you could try 0.5.1 beta or SVN too, many GPU-related issues have been worked around there.

I have a basic understanding about Linux, but I am still learning. I am transitioning from Windows to Linux. It is hard to break the old dos habits I learned when I got into computers. Actually started with TI BASIC on a TI 99 4a many years ago, but don't remember much about it. I got tired of fixing Window 7 and put Linux on my laptop. The few problems I've had in the past I've been able to research and workout because I've been able to read in the terminal and see what was going on. This just doesn't give me anything to go on.

I may just check out one of those. I could use a refresher on compiling anyway. Had to do that a few times with Slackware, but haven't done it since I went to Mint.

Yes, that's an old mesa. I fixed a lot of bugs in my computer by upgrading to 7.11.1. Though some graphics corruption remains on high shader settings, crashing bugs were fixed in 7.11.1.

You can also disable shaders with vssetup, that should also help without upgrading MESA, which is tricky since it's a core component of your windowing system.

Okay it looks like I have some reading to do this weekend. In just glancing through the mesa3d site there could be some other things I need to upgrade before upgrading mesa.
On their site there is also a version 7.11.2.
"Mesa 7.11.2 is released. This release was made primarily to fix build problems with 7.11.1 on Mandriva and to fix problems related to glCopyTexImage to luminance-alpha textures. That later was believed to have been fixed in 7.11.1 but was not."
I'm not afraid to go for the upgrade, at the worst I'll have to reinstall Linux. All my files are backed up on a shared external hard-drive. I'll just have to read and follow the instructions. Updating a bios is the only thing that bothers me. Had the power go out as soon as I started one and it never worked again.

I'm gonna assume upgrading MESA or disabling shaders fixed this. If not, speak up.
