I'm planning to set up and use a server with UMLs for more serious production use. The server I have is a dual-core athlon64 with some disk and 4gb of memory. Now question is how to configure it in order to get the most out of the UMLs. The first major decision is whether to run in 32 or 64 bit mode. Running in 64-bit mode feels better, since it is a 64-bit machine. Memory usage will likely be a bit more efficient too. However, my experiments so far with running gentoo guests show that while SKAS0 works well on 64 bits, I can't expect SKAS3 to do so. Running in 32-bit mode works almost as well. Chances are SKAS3 would work, but I'd have less functional memory shuffling. However, perhaps the gain by using SKAS3 would counter the performance loss in memory shuffling? So questions.. With a machine I expect to not upgrade host kernel on for the foreseeable future: * Should I use 32 or 64 bit host system? * Which host kernel + patch set should I use? * Which guest kernel + patch set is most likely to hold for some time with this configuration? // Joel |
