First tries led to not being able to login at all (sshd not installed yet). Finally I started UML with 'con3=none con4=none con5=none con6=none' in addition. That got rid of virtual consoles 3 to 6 and displayed an error message during bootup which helped me identify the place where Mandrake uses the additional consoles. In script /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit there are the following lines for i in 2 3 4 5 6; do > /dev/tty$i 2> /dev/null done After removing 3 to 6 I only get 2 consoles instead of 6. Problem solved ;-) Thanks for giving me a pointer to look into the input options of UML.
