Thanks Jeff - worked it out. It was a combination of * Missing in.telnetd - didnt have telnet server installed on the HOST. * devfs - the image I was booting from was a non devfs image - so the getty's were referring to devices that the guest devfs didnt map back to the old (traditional) path (not sure why, but didnt look into it)... It is strange though - I've managed to panic the guest very easily - just be telneting to the console ports - and disconnecting.
