The UML console should just be one of many possible consoles, like how is normally done.. Having the simple stdio console should be considered similar to having the serial console. Have not looked at the UML stdio console implementation in a while so I do not know why this is not the case or how hard it would be to clean up.. Making the stdio console a virtual console backend driver is probably hard however.. and not sure this is something I'd like to see.. the stdio console (as also the serial console) is not screen oriented.
