No, I'm using a preconfigured tap device. I think I may have figured out my problem (sort of). If I don't fully configure the tap device on the host side before starting up UML, everything works fine. (Which is why it worked before, I think... I "fixed" my script after starting up a couple of UMLs.) To be a little more specific, I'm configuring the UMLs with addresses on the LAN, then doing proxy arp on the host. It seems that when everything is configured properly (at least I think properly), the host arps on the tap interface, making the UML give me that error. I'm guessing at all this from the behavior... I haven't fired up tcpdump yet, although I probably should. The simpler solution in my case though might just be to allocate some non-LAN addresses for the UMLs and just route to them normally.
